STATEMENT FROM KENNEBEC EMA REGARDING THE ICE JAM ON THE KENNEBEC RIVER.

February 1, 2010

The ice jam remains stationary. A current estimate of the ice jam is that it is approximately one mile long, and ten to fifteen feet deep.

The U.S. Coast Guard operations on the Kennebec River have ended for the current time period. The cutters made their way to the bridge in Gardiner, but the recent cold weather is re-freezing the ice along the river.

The current position of the Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Geological Survey, local, county, state and federal officials is to closely monitor the river flows and depth at locations monitored by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The links below offer the most current information available at locations of concern to the situation.

Citizens are advised to maintain heightened awareness regarding the Kennebec River from Augusta south.
